Continuemos com a nossa missão evangelizadora polo ocidente :D Toca-lhes vez a uns mestres do speed metal que começaram, aliás, com uma imagem Visual Kei, ainda que a foram limitando; são os Sex Machineguns (SMG).

Além das maquilhagens e outras exuberâncias iniciais e do seu carácter muitas vezes “cómico” (em letras e actuações, como aquilo de adicar-lhe uma canção às laranjas da sua terra), esta banda liderada pelo cantor/excelente guitarrista Anchang (nome real Koji Ando) poderia dar lições de como fazer Metal fresco e original a mais de um.

Desgraçadamente algo deveu de se passar no 2007 ou 2008, quando Anchang desfixo a formação para reaparecer pouco depois com uns outros músicos desconhecidos. Certo que ele era e é o compositor principal e que Sex Machineguns sempre soa a… Anchang, mas as mudanças afectaram algo o estilo e som. Mas agora vai uma canção dessas clássicas, da sua época dourada, o tema que me enganchou a mim definitivamente a este mundo de tolémia e velocidade dos SMG. Preparádevos para a erupção volcánica do Sakurajima.

Geography saves lives. At least it’s at the grasp of the Geographical Science to reasonably minimise risks, making a potentially disastrous situation somehow less extreme. In fact, that’s one of the main and most practical tasks of professional geographers. Geographical models, field experience, risk assessment, topographical and geophysical analysis, territorial management and planning… all that should have helped in preventing the calamity that has recently descended over the Portuguese Atlantic island of Madeira. On Saturday the 20th of February 2010 a very heavy storm swept the mountain sides of the area around the island’s capital – Funchal – a 100,000 city located in the base of a gentle cup-like bay which was easily flooded as the river burst its banks. Yet, with the flood came all the materials dragged from upland, transforming the river into a massive pressure hose spraying mud and stone across the city.

Alluvions are actually quite common in the history of the island, and some walls along the banks had been built. Unfortunately, many now feel that those were too small too few in order to counteract the force of nature, helped by the negligence in territorial planning by the local authorities – a (sadly) universal old but persistent story. In more detail, following the storm of 1803, the Oudinot Plan designed the modification of the banks, that’s when the first walls were erected. In the meantime, parts of the river bed (dry most of the time except for when it rains badly) were modified to allow the crossing of pedestrians and vehicles. Entire segments were eventually buried just to build on top of them. To make things worse, the tourist boom of recent years provoked the eradication of plant coverage on the sides of the mountains, a “perfect” spot to build houses on if you’re looking for a spectacular view. Too bad authorities thought about the easy money they could make with this, not about the fact that plants and trees keep the land together, preventing landslides, a very important factor because when rain falls on a slope it thrives on any rolling thingie laying around which will, inevitably, end up in the banks down below.

Lots of unexpected rain? Sure, but a meteorological radar and some territorial planning can go a long way. It is hard work and it is expensive, but always worthy in the long term.

There were 11 dead in the 1993 storm. This year the official count was 42, over 70 injured and a good few missing. Surely there’s no way territorial management and planning can prevent all fatalities but it can, at least, foresee an emergency situation, avoid major risk factors and provide solutions for an aftermath, whether this is in Madeira, Haiti or Chile. Then again, some are too interested in the money, some don’t have it, some don’t really care.

Uma das primeiras canções dum concerto inesquecível: a quinta e derradeira noite do festival “Lendas da Guitarra” (Sevilha, 15-19 Outubro 1991). Já limpo dos pedantes das noites anteriores, nessa ocasião estavam sobre o cenário três mestres do instrumento: o mágico Steve Vai liderando, o meu músico de rock favorito (Doutor) Brian May dando o contraponto com o seu som inimitável, e Joe Satriani humildemente fazendo o acompanhamento. A canção é “Liberty”, escrita polo próprio Vai. São só um par de minutinhos, mas um par de minutos que demonstram aquilo de que – parafraseando ao Axl Rose quando falava dos Queen – “esta gente fai música, fai arte”.

Outros músicos de luxo aí presentes são o Neil Murray no baixo (ex-Whitesnake, ex-Black Sabbath, ex-Brian May Band) e o grande, tristemente desaparecido, Cozy Powell na bateria (ex-Rainbow, ex-Whitesnake, ex-Black Sabbath, ex-Brian May Band).

Com cousas como esta mesmo um aprendiz de baterista como eu sonha com, talvez, dar-lhe uma oportunidade às seis cordas algum dia ;)

E eu pergunto-me porque as televisões públicas deixaram alguma vez de emitir maravilhas do rock-metal… bom, acho que isso é uma outra história bem complicada…

By now we are all used to see pictures of “Earth at night” and the likes which, as some say, illustrate the degree of development as revealed by the number of bright dots. In other words, the more little lights and the closer they are together in clusters the richer or more developed the place is. Well, at least it shows who lights up enough bulbs at night so we can see it from space and who doesn’t; it also indicates where people live in those places. Sounds reasonable. But – interesting as this is – it still is a static picture that could in some parts be explained by other factors (settlement pattern, cultural traditions, environmental policies regulating luminic contamination, orography, etc). Yet, fluxes don’t lie! So for a more intriguing and better visual understanding of how the world operates in terms of interrelations there’s nothing like paying attention to one of the key elements of the so-called globalization: air transportation. Indeed, planes flying from one place to the other, indicating who goes where, when, how often, how fast or, in short, how transnational human interactions move around. Turno agora para uma banda extinta no 2006, os míticos (no Japão) Animetal, liderada polo carismático cantante Eizo Sakamoto que, antes, durante e despois também cantou com a banda Anthem.

Os Animetal faziam versões heavy de canções clássicas de séries de televisão anime e tokusatsu, e figerom muitas! – algumas com mais fortuna que outras, mas sempre interessantes. Lembrade, no Metal japonês não há tabus ;)

O seu grande tema (e que rachava com tudo ao vivo) era “Gatchaman”, ou “Comando G” para o público galego. Desgraçadamente nós tivemos que sofrer uma tradução ao espanhol do original, com um tema musical irreconhecível e de inferior qualidade, embora de rima contagiosa. Mas, quando se juntam a linda versão original e os Animetal numa noite inspirada temos diamantes como isto:

aah… esse público entregado… energia em estado puro!

…do Metal: Manowar. Quando menos a melhor banda ao vivo nestes tempos. E digo a melhor do mundo, em qualquer género. Um concerto destes tipos num dia minimamente inspirado deixa em ridículo a qualquer outra banda que já tenha visto em termos de som (volume e qualidade), presença no cenário e profissionalismo, sem esquecer os risos e a tolémia.

Aqui vai um dos seus mais recentes temas, “God or Man”, tocado por primeira vez ao vivo em Julho do 2009 no seu próprio festival, o “Magic Circle Festival”, na Alemanha. A música começa por volta de 0:50 (cousas do youtube).

Recém saiu o novo single dos Metsatöll, fantástica banda estónia de folk-metal. A canção é “Vaid Vaprust”, e o disco vai ser “Äio”, com data de lançamento no 3 de Março. Já figem a encomenda, claro :D

Desfrutade do vídeo. É uma autêntica pequena maravilha, um conto dumas terras distantes mas estranhamente familiares.

Comecemos as hostilidades com esta tremenda banda japonesa – Seikima-II (pronunciado algo assim como seikimatsu) – não tão conhecida como os X-Japan ou os Loudness por estas partes, mas não foi por falta de empenho. O tema mostrado abaixo é um dos seus clássicos, “Jack The Ripper”, e no cenário todos os membros, passados e presentes, numa espécie de digressão de despedida, é dizer: o Demon Kogure a cantar, 3 bateristas, 2 baixistas, perdim-a-conta dos guitarristas, mas tocam 8 solos… you get the idea

Disque estão a preparar novos concertos por aquilo de estarem aborrecidos na case sem fazerem nada de jeito durante anos. O melhor é que prometem uma “world tour”, isto é, algumas datas em Europa e EUA além do Japão. A mim já me tarda!

E não, “não vão pintados como os KISS”. Pensade um pouco de onde é que vêm as maquilhagens…
